The Hochgebirgs-Jäger-Bataillone of the Wehrmacht were highly trained mountain troops trained for combat in the highest peaks and mountain ranges in all theatres of war.These unique badges were authorized for specific battalions to honor their distinct regional history & specialized tactical role.In 1943 the unit was converted and renamed Gebirgsjäger-Bataillon 54. Its surviving seasoned personnel continued to serve under this new designation on the front lines.They were typically worn directly on the side of the field cap or shirt
